Sihing David Bonilla
David Bonilla first met Si fu Greg Pritchett when his family moved in across the street. The Bonilla’s were going through hard times with their son, and at age 11 David’s ego was growing out of control. He was defiant and his grades were suffering. Si fu Greg and David’s father, Pedro, soon became good friends and upon learning of their situation, he suggested that they enroll David into his Kung-fu class at the Y.M.C.A. David trained extensively with Si fu Greg, both in class and privately, and had to learn to accept strong discipline over the next two years. David became a white belt competitor within his first four months of training and won first place in sparring in an intermediate division. This was very intense program for him and as he grew older he drifted off and was taken out of the art. David moved to 4th Street, where his life took a turn for the worse. He dropped out of high school and began running the streets. At the time, he felt the streets were more family than his own. A while passed and David ran into Si fu Greg and inquired about class. Si fu Greg offered him training in exchange for his help with cleaning, passing out school flyers, and assisting with class. David began training for 3-4 hours per day, learning to teach, and working at the school from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. He was working on getting back the control he thought he had a long time ago. As he continued his training, David felt somewhat closed in from his long days at the school. Outside factors began clouding his mind. Trying unsuccessfully to balance the two, David resorted to his negative lifestyle. He stopped going to the kung fu school for reasons that were merely excuses. David missed his positive environment, teachings, training, and the love. In 2004, at 17 years old, no schooling, no job, no control, David went to the newly established C.K Kung-Fu Academy to see if he could come back. When he arrived, he felt the disappointment of his teacher. Si fu told him if he wanted to return he would have to get back in school. So he did. He began attending school at James H. Groves. Si fu Greg did not take him back. Next, he had to get a job. So he did this as well, working as a grocery stocker. It would take months to prove his sincerity. He was eager to get back into martial arts, so he held steadfast to his determination. Si fu Greg eventually accepted him back as a student, and David also went on to learn the trade of Facilities Maintenance and is planning for his college education. In 2006, David was promoted to Sihing. He is head of the children’s programs, is ranked Brown sash in Kung fu, and yellow belt 2nd degree in Modern Vee-Jitsu. . This discipline has molded his life and changed him into a positive young man.
